If Your Teams Aren’t Consistently Performing, Then Why Not?
High-functioning teams are complex systems that must balance the needs of the individual against those of the team and organization. This isn’t easy to accomplish. Here are the most common roadblocks (Patrick Lencioni – The 5 dysfunctions of a team):

  • The lack of trust; trust is absent when team members are reluctant to be hurtful to each other, are unwilling to admit to faults or weaknesses or that they need help. Without a sure measure of safety feeling, a basis of trust is impossible.
  • The fear of conflict; teams with a lack of trust are not able to conduct passionate and unfiltered discussions about essential subjects. Therefore commentary is often given about each other ´behind someone’s back´. In a work environment where team members don’t openly give their opinions, poor decision forming is often the result.
  • The lack of commitment; it’s difficult for team members to completely feel involved in making decisions without discussions and conflicts. Employees can become indifferent or even cynical through lack of direction and commitment.
  • The avoidance of accountability; when teams are not committed to a clear strategy, even the most driven individuals would hold back on addressing their colleagues’ behavior and addressing activities that are unproductive for the success of the team.
  • The inattention to results; team members that are not involved or don’t personally feel responsible, will place their own interests (ego, career, recognition etc.) above the collective goals of the team. When a team has lost sight of the necessity of the results, the organization will eventually pay the price.
